Well according to the inventor of the term it's this:

1. A true weblog is a log of all the URLs you want to save or share. (So del.icio.us is actually better for blogging than blogger.com.)

and that:

2. You can certainly include links to your original thoughts, posted elsewhere … but if you have more original posts than links, you probably need to learn some humility.

Bullshit.

Well if you were blogging in the late 90s, that certainly was true. Not now - the idea of blogging has developed and changed. The reason that blogging exploded isn't a bunch of links to sites, it's the human connection.

You can get loads of links from Google or digg or delicious, yet LJ and Wordpress et al are bigger than ever....why? Well because people got bored with posting loads of links to Websites that Suck, tips with Netscape 3 and funny animated gifs of Hamsters et al in 1999. It's boring, and it's it's more interesting for the readers and the blogger to focus on the views and life of the person writing the blog. Blogging became necessarily a mixture of online journal and journalism, not 'I totally love this site'. It grew up.

Shame the likes of Jorn Barger seem still stuck in the 90s. And has some other rather dodgy views, apparently.

Thanks to [profile] greatbearmd for pointing out the link...and writing an interesting post too ;-)
