Listening to BBC Radio 1 (it's enforced by work) and tipped off by [livejournal.com profile] tga they were talking about podcasts on a spot during Jo Whiley's show - 11:40am if you want to go relisten on the BBC website.

It was just an extended plug for the podcast by that obseqious little toad Chris Moyles, and various Radio 1 podcasts (they joined the party fairly late remember; I remember when the only BBC podcast this time last year was Melvyn Bragg!) but they came up with the classic that because of music licensing there are "not that many" music podcasts out there and it's mostly only spoken word podcasts that are available. WTF?

Radio 1 couldn't be more WRONG if it had just announced that the Queen Mum had just risen from the grave and gone on a killing spree. There are loads of music podcasts, legal or not - they mentioned there were a few record label or recording artist podcasts - WRONG - there are many of those, growing by the day. And many unauthorised ones or ones using podsafe music (they mentioned there were a few unsigned music podcasts - err, 'a few' if few means many hundred if not 1,000s)...not asking them to mention them by name individually but to give the impression that there aren't many music podcasters is disingenous at best. Trust old media to not only get it wrong but also do it in a way that benefits only itself (as I think the Beeb has mainly spoken word podcasts so it's in their favour to give that impression).

Grrr, get it right BBC. Even on Radio 1 you have some duty at a slight stab at an attempt at journalism, as it's public broadcasting radio.

And If they play another damned Eminem track 'unironically' I'm gonna kill...the playlist of Radio 1 is SO bad and DJs inane it makes commercial radio sound positively good.
