Gene's album 'Olympian' was on ful rotation that year and several years after, with 'To See The Lights'
He said
"London can you wait
For all the things I have to say
London can you wait?"*
Sitting here singing along to it in the radio it was a message from a lost time, where I loved that song when I desperately wanted to come and live in London, and be out and proud, only 50 miles away, yet so close yet so far growing up...and now I've been here nearly 10 years, and certainly that starry-eyed person has gone.
* The bit about death walking in is almost laughable though - Martin Rossiters songs always seem to turn the most mundane situation to be about death...the man was obsessed. 'Left Handed' is a personal coming out anthem though, being about being bi/gay (hence the Isle of Man bits, it was the only place in the UK not to decriminalise homosexuality, and 'left hander' is a slang for gay)
