Bestival

fingertrouble: photography (behind camera)
Just uploading my Bestival pictures (Bestival is a big music festival here) and this one struck me as something that looks completely 'shopped or filtered. In fact it's not been touched other than scaled and uploaded (larger version here)

The day really did look like that!

Yes I went to Bestival and saw the likes of Gary Numan, Hot Chip, Adam Ant, Rocking Old Fart, Jeff Lewis, Sister Sledge, Sigur Ros, De La Soul, Stanton Warriors, Psychemagik, Stevie Wonder, Coldcut, Fourtet, Justin Robertson, David Rodigan, London Beatbox Collective, El-P, Flying White Dots, Friendly Fires and Orbital. Phew! Some visual highlights, the full set is over here https://picasaweb.google.com/115246594873527352660/Bestival2012

Gary Numan - was underwhelmed, he played a lot of his later NIN-style stuff.

There was a blow-up church for marriages. Who gets married at a festival?!?

We had amazingly beautiful weather for the first 3 days...but freezing at night.

Adam Ant was great and a lot of fun. Even I did the Prince Charming dance.

The Ambient Forest  - great at night. This is Paige my friend who I went with, and her bf Stuart.

Everyone photographed the other side...this is more funny, LOL.

No! It must be a cupcake we thought. Nope, it is actually a giant breast.

Theme was Wildlife and lots of people came with costumes.

During Coldcut's set. I always seem to end up by the smoke machine...

Or laser...!

Two of El-P's musicians jamming out keytar to guitar!

El-P's set was great, I bailed Stevie Wonder for it and was not disappointed. Bonus was I could actually see and almost touch him, rather than a dot miles away and not being able to breath or dance.

Fireworks after Stevie's set were amazing. Weirdly they must've been going off about the same time as the Closing Ceremony in London had theirs...

Orbital live are everything they're claimed to be. Amazing, I was completely sober too! Front row.

Stanton Warriors at Arcadia. This fiery Mad-Max post-apocalyptic set had to be seen to be believed. They played Kleptones 'Voodoo Sabotage' at the end, you can see the video I took here, gives a good idea of how mad that place was at night:

Altold it was great - only minor niggles was 2 shower trucks for 50,000 people (!!!) which wasn't great when I had sweat rash, and 4 hour wait for a shuttle bus at the end...which given the sad fatal coach crash freakily near where I grew up could've been a lot worse I guess.

Best performances have to be El-P, Sister Sledge who were brilliant and professional and their band was super-slick putting to rest any Chic-comparisons, Orbital and Sigur Ros.

Best DJ set was hands down David Rodigan - he's a complete master and I am not worthy. I need to see a full set of his, sadly we couldn't find that field and arrived 20 mins before the end of his set. The Bollywood tent was far too warm anyway!

Sadly couldn't find 2 Bears DJ set on the schedule app or anywhere (they DJ'd somewhere on the Thursday!) and Azaelia Banks, Frank Ocean, Chairlift, Skepta and Factory Floor all cancelled (and were all acts I really wanted to see) - I missed Future Swords and Ane Brun and Major Lazer too - heard the latter in the distance but was doing something else, resting or eating probably.

I got a nasty cold (all those unwashed people and no handwashing facilities as that gel stuff ran out in most of the toilets - haven for germs) which has only just passed...and we were completely knackered, but it was worth it! Next time though, I want showers and a decent bed...
