dark mix one

OK I've been working for the last few months on this mix - it's not often I release a long mix other than a podcast (read: ever) and this is the first in a serious of darker mixes (hence the name funnily enough) but there is more than just 'these tunes wot I like' to it, as I've spotted what I think to be a new genre, or a new influence on a bunch of French and British dance music bands (hence the new name, it's what I call this sort of music influenced by John Carpenter, Goblin, 99 Records bands such as Liquid Liquid and NY art disco funk et al and giving it a modern dance, electro-house or electro spin) and mixed these bands together with what I think were their inspirations and other tunes I think have a related feel or source.

Anyway you can read the veri-mini-essay or just download and listen here. It's the best thing I've done, gone through several versions and eventually was finished in Ableton, first long mix I've done in that package...I will do more in Ableton, although I'd recommend 'playtesting' mixes in other packages like Traktor, as I did because like Acid Pro, Ableton isn't totally flexible to rearranging stuff, without some evil chop n' paste.

#2 in a series of soppy posts...

After a heartbreaking post where Big Bird aka Caroll Spinney sings Bein' Green at Jim Henson's Memorial I made the big mistake of watching this other video that came up:

Not Safe For Work...because floods of tears aren't really a good work look. You have been warned...especially 5:10 mark, Just One Person. Don't go there unless you have really understanding co-workers (or are alone).

I really miss Jim Henson...it weird as I grow older I kind of appreciate Sesame Street and the Muppets more than I did as a kid. Weird to think he'd only be 71 now. 53 is far too young.

Dawn of the Dead, because it has a seriously dark critique of capitalism and humanity in it - the zombies ultimately aren't the scary ones, it's the people. And Silence of the Lambs, that movie psychologically messes with your head!

I'd heard about patterns encoded in money, so you can't just 'photocopy' a 5 pound note - and if you do the pattern communicates to the copier and it prints mush; or the fine lines and grids create a moire effect. Seems fair enough, you don't really have any right to go photocopy cash.

What I didn't know is that similar technology is in colour laser printers too, and apply to all prints made, which then can be tracked back to the printer it came from.

Spooky stuff. I wish the EFF would print a list of the non-code printers then we could all switch, forcing the printer companies to drop it.

Danah Boyd is a blog I read regularly now, interesting insights and research into social networks, but to avoid the 'uhoh' moment in Facebook it's really important to set your privacy right - it seems like FB unlike other networks lulls you into false sense of security seeming like a 'walled garden' - but that walled garden can have 'holes' that let people peek through.
