tga I've just seen Depeche Mode at the Wireless Festival - completely. fucking. amazing. What can I say?
Same set as Coachella, and amazing video and show - highlights for me were Personal Jesus - not a song till now was my fave but everyone danced and sung along - ditto Never Let Me Down, and crazy crazy intense version of Photographic. In my Room (surprisingly, since I love that song) and one of the slower new ones are the only ones that failed to connect.
Spent the day there in Hyde Park with Scott
tga, his boyfriend Matt, Ollie, Joseph, James and Emmy who's also an LJ friend of Scott's - dunno her nick though. We saw Thomas Dolby - I liked him, although a bit clunky (as I explained to Scott, he's our one man band 'version' of Kraftwerk, with all that implies) - he did Hyperactive and Europa and the Pirate Twins (no She Blinded me with Science?).
Then missed The Dears, OK Go who were on earlier and Mystery Jets who sounded fucking awful - prog cacophony terribleness - don't believe what you read in the NME kids - and basked in the sunshine VIP area which Scott had managed to wangle us :-D
Goldfrapp was camp and funny; didn't really totally get her earlier set but Train, Strict Machine and Ooh La La got all the queers (including me) and girls in the crowd bopping. There's something in those glam electro basslines isn't there? Show was great with the dancing wolves and glittering horses heads, and loads more. She seemed a bit too serious to begin with but by the end was smiling and had fun. Not a total conversion but a good performance, and she can perform, although it's so hard to get the songs she's ripped off for those riffs out of my head, so I was singing 'Lucky Number' along with Number 1, 'White Horse' along with Ride a White Horse, and 'I Feel Love' with Ooh La La (which also rips a T-Rex guitar riff) and Doctorin' the Tardis with Train, of course!
Then Depeche Mode came on and was amazing - even though I've heard the set via Coachella it didn't prepare me for the video or light show, or the camaraderie and emotional impact - I was singing and dancing along, clapping the whole lot - something that seems a bit crass on video or on audio but when you're there makes perfect sense...Stripped was a special moment for me also.
Photos to follow :-D
Thanks Scott!
