Bored so I'll write a little of my new CD perchasez.
Oh and YAY LORDI! Classic that Finnish death metal (well its less extreme cousin) should win Eurovision - vido here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py5Of-4kJ70&search=eurovision%20%20finland
The Trip - Steve Mackey and Jarvis Cocker
Simply great, like other Trip's like Tom Middleton's it's an eclectic journey of obscure and classic tunes - what I like here is they let all tunes play out fully, no mixing, and the tunes. Don't like the first half of CD1 - gets a little too cheesy / 60's charity-bin at the start (Bob Lind? Gene Pitney? WTF?) but most of the tunes rocketh mightily. Even when they don't rock.
Favourite tunes: Georges DeLaRue's spooky alien-esque Les Visiteurs, Screaming Lord Sutch - Flashing lights (believe me release this now as a white label 7" and people would think it's the latest indie-darling!), Elton Motello (HE GIVES ME HEAD!!!!) and Human league versions of Rock n' Roll, OMD's Waiting for the Man and Psychic TV. Classics such as Fall's Lost in Music and Egyptian Reggae always good to hear.
Brakes - Give Some Blood
Not listened to much of this apart from Jackson, Heard About Your Band, and All Night Disco Party but what I heard from them (rather than about them, or Sleatter Kinney LOL) is great...the vocalist has that kind of singing voice that you think'll grate but doesn't, and the acerbic Heard About Your Band was one of my faves from Rough Trade 05 - just heard it again on shuffle and it's class. So is the country-styling of Jackson.
And it's only 7.99 at the mo. Bargain! Won't say where cos that's advertising...think little dogs ;-) They diddled me on the price of the others though...bah Amazon is cheaper.
Ian Dury - Reasons to be Cheerful - Best of
So sad when he died - I remember when this came out a few years back but currently on sale - 4.99 for 2 CDs - wiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!! Already had a few songs come round like Blockheads and Poo Poo in the Prawns. And danced like a loon to Reasons to be Cheerful part 3 at the new Yo Suzi night while the hipster kidz (who don't dance and look so pained and bored and depressed while not doing so) looked on in disgust. I don't care, me and Kirk can mosh and have a good time while they pretend to be sub-Bowery club kidz slapped up wallpaper. 'I Came to dance'
And that kind of sums up Ian Dury in all his incarnations, outsider with no truck with fashion, artistic but never pretentious.
And yes there Aren't Half Been Some Clever Bastards. Exactly...and he had a stick like John has. Maybe being crippled is the new rock and roll? :-D
Only down side is that Clever Trevor, Spasticus Autisticus and Billericay Dickie are live-only...bah.
The knife - Silent Shout
Heard these on loads of podcasts including
nlotic's I Motor Away, and kind of grew on me like a scandianvian fungus. Not heard much but Still Light - weird, reminded me of Eskimo by The Residents, amd We Share our Mother's Health, I love that chorus, but I have absolutely no idea why. It just sounds ODD. Like some ice goddess or siren wailing along...
Not sure I like this, I think this might be a grower. For odd moments. Which I think are coming...
