Saw 'V for Vendetta' with [livejournal.com profile] sardonicbear (Greg) and was blown away - here is a great film that not only criticises post-9-11 paranoia (Evey asks 'how can you change the world by blowing up one building?' and V replies 'Only if the people see it as a symbol') and is pro-freedom fighter against totalitarian regime, pro direct-action and a form of anarchy, pro-gay and lesbian, and according to Greg stays fairly faithful to the graphic novel with some subplots taken out.

Really I've not seen a political action movie or something based on what is basically a cartoon in a long time (Team America is one, but this hit far deeper). V even kills the 'party members' and gives them a red rose - symbol of the Labour party, but this is no New Labour, it's a fascist totalitarian regime that thinks nothing of torturing and killing political dissidents, immigrants and gay men and women.

You MUST SEE THIS MOVIE. It's amazing, if only to see the Houses of Parliament get blown up, I'm not Guy Fawkes but I was saying 'BURN! BURN! BURN!' to myself as it happened.

A real kick in the arse for Bush and Blair and an update of sorts to 1984 with a more happier ending, and bigger political points.

"People should not be scared of their governments, governments should be scared of their people."

Indeed.
