healthcare
Aug. 19th, 2009 07:42 pmMy take is this:
Swine flu isn't socialist; epidemics and viruses see no colour, race, insurance card nor status. The Victorians learned this the hard way; diseases don't stop at the Rectory gate; they don't get warded away by copies of the Economist and Financial Times nor Guardian; they don't get run down by BMWs and Hummers. They don't care what suit you wear nor which school you went to. Sure they are more prevalent amongst the poor and those who have no healthcare, but they never stay there. I'm sure the situation in Mexico and the US wasn't hindered by some magic bullet of medicine, in fact I think it was helped on it's merry macabre way by people not being able to afford the most basic of healthcare.
It's not just selfish not to care about your fellow man (or woman) in this 80's 'greed is good' fashion, it's positively suicidal. Sad that the Victorian likes of TB are coming back because people can't afford the shots or don't get them done (or fiddle while Rome burns and panic about the unproven, and relatively minor issues about childhood vaccination when the bigger picture of mass epidemic is far more dangerous).
But hey, it's your funeral.
