Brum brum brum
Feb. 1st, 2006 01:31 pmBelated LJ post here, was in Birmingham last weekend with John, John was speaking at a conference on Electronic Documents in Selly Oaks (no oaks, apparently) and we spent the weekend beconcreted by Brum's stony charms...most of the time was spent in the Fountain, the local bearish pub; no great meals to write home (or online) about but we were right by the gay area and chinese area so the sirens and horns woke me up as the Chinese New year came about.
Saw loads of art galleries; went to the main Birmingham gallery (major Pre Raphaelite collection as it was where one of them was from); Ikon was closed (natch) and went to see the Moonrise over Europe (JC Dahl and friends) at the Barber Institute which was fun...ended up in leamington Spa due to track works and had a look around the Pump Room gallery there - loads of modern (Marc Quinn, Catherine Yass et al) and older works including the first time I've see a gay couple acknowledged in a painting blurb! All galleries we saw although not large collections, the quality was really high...
Other news the extended family member is out of hospital and doing better at home, but he's still not totally there, personality is different and no consideration for others having other things to do is shot (I know people like that, the sort that get forceful ideas in their head and WHY CAN'T WE DO IT NOW?) but otherwise he's a lot better...
Bought John a bottle of 1986 Carerre (sp?) Armanac last night for a belated surprise stealth birthday present which went down well.
Also got Tom Middleton's The Trip second hand while in Brum - very good, very ecelectic selection including some odd covers. Also have Acid Brass (brass band tunes of acid house tracks) ordered on CD from Amazon which might have arrived :-D
