dark mix 1: dark electro / disco noir

dark mix one

OK I've been working for the last few months on this mix - it's not often I release a long mix other than a podcast (read: ever) and this is the first in a serious of darker mixes (hence the name funnily enough) but there is more than just 'these tunes wot I like' to it, as I've spotted what I think to be a new genre, or a new influence on a bunch of French and British dance music bands (hence the new name, it's what I call this sort of music influenced by John Carpenter, Goblin, 99 Records bands such as Liquid Liquid and NY art disco funk et al and giving it a modern dance, electro-house or electro spin) and mixed these bands together with what I think were their inspirations and other tunes I think have a related feel or source.

Anyway you can read the veri-mini-essay or just download and listen here. It's the best thing I've done, gone through several versions and eventually was finished in Ableton, first long mix I've done in that package...I will do more in Ableton, although I'd recommend 'playtesting' mixes in other packages like Traktor, as I did because like Acid Pro, Ableton isn't totally flexible to rearranging stuff, without some evil chop n' paste.

Looks good, just downloaded it and will listen to it tonight. But what's really strange is until five days ago I had no Fad Gadget in my music collection. Not sure why, I used to have them on vinyl but since I'm almost all digital these days itsomehow disappeared. I was at our library the other day and they had the Best of Fad Gadget (along with 20+ other cds), so I brought it home and ripped it and that's what I've been listening to all week. Strange coincidence.

I'm fairly new to fad gadget - a friend many years ago put Back to nature on a tape and I've loved that ever since...it was when the new Presets LP leaked I went and found stuff on YouTube and elsewhere because I thought it sounded familiar, I was right...Presets definitely have a Fad influence.
