Top of the Pops axed

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5099894.stm

Not surprising - maybe pop is dead?

Actually funnily enough, working on a mix called that atm - any of you DJs know any anti-industry songs or music about the death of pop music/record industry?

Sample Credits Don't Pay My Bills by ESG? ;)

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh yes - that sounds cool.

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
that's an EP not a song? Do any of the songs on it refer to the sampling?

Hey Mr. DJ, I Thought You Said We Had a Deal by They Might Be Giants
Anti-Music Song by The Mountain Goats, though that's more of a "I hate you and your musical taste and you" song
Getting Ahead In The Lucrative Field Of Artist Management by UNKLE

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks! The UNKLE and the Mountain Goats (isn't that Jandek?) sound cool.

Although I'm political opposed to the use of They Might Be Giants (whiny obscure US college music for US college students) I'll give it a go.

I trust your musical taste, only for you, emotional blackmail etc etc...LOL

Jandek's band was the Units. The Mountain Goats are completely different-they're coherent and almost have melody.

I can't believe I forgot it-Jesus and Mary Chain-I Love Rock N Roll
Boris The Sprinkler-My Radio Is Telling Me To Kill (The Guys On My Radio) and Down By Law-Nothing Good On The Radio both on Go-Kart vs. the Corporate Giant Vol. 2
Negativland, of course, but which one? Downloading? Happy Hero?
Bill Hicks-Artistic Roll Call from Rant in E Minor when he talks about "If you do a commercial you're off the artistic roll call forever."

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh thanks for these - of course Negativland are there...No Business of course! :-D

"DJ" and/or "Fashion" by Bowie...subtle, but makes a point.

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought Fashion was simply against fashion industry.

DJ I don't know so I'll check it out...thanks :-)

My Space Video Killed the Top of the Pops Radio Star?

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
that song needs an update!

Myspac Killed the Internet (or P2P) Star surely? Most Myspace music is terrible...especially the stuff that got big off it, but then again that's just music industry co-option.

[identity profile] tigerbeard.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing particularly cool but a quick scan through my internal musical database came up with

EMI - The Sex Pistols
Radio Radio - Elvis Costello
Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle - Cake
Medio-Core - NoFX
Do Re Me So Far So Good - Carter USM

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
aha cool

most of Carter USM it seems are anti-music industry. Kind of forgot about that....yay! I know Radio Radio but will check out the others

Thanks!

Hitsville U.K. by the Clash, of course.

[identity profile] timbearcub.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
ah yes that is sort of on my list.

The version on Sandanista disappoints me though - I wonder if there are any good covers?
