danthered's blog, but one other thought - Hezbollah is a terrorist group - so is not acting for the Lebanese goverment, yet Israel bombs the civilian airport and takes action against the nation?
This is like Britain bombing Dublin Airport for the actions of the IRA...?
How is this sensible or defending your nation? The stupidity and arrogance amazes me. The Israeli government needs to learn diplomacy and negotiation skills, and fast. And calm down a little? Then if you don't always act with bigger force over smaller; maybe your foes will respect your right to be and leave you alone. If not at least you have the moral high ground, rather than falsely claiming it while holding a big stick to hit them if you don't like the answer.
And don't get me started on the US military funding of Israel...:-(
But then again the British fucked this whole thing up to start with *blush*. As people have rightly said it's very complex, but I do think Israel's response is OTT and given Iran and a few others ATM it's an unstable area and WWIII could start there.
As a poster to the BBC Hear Your Say comments board (which started this off) said unusually wisely:
"Israel objects to the kidnapping of IDF personnel and has cited non-compliance of UN resolutions by neighbouring states.
Is this the same Israel that has operatives working covertly around the world kidnapping those it does not agree with, dissidents and suspects, summarily assassinates its political foes without trial at its whim and has dismissed countless resolutions themselves?"
Right on - I still remember Mossad (the Israeli secret service_) abducting and assasinating someone several years ago in London...as they did several other places world-wide :-(. Need to clean their own house before criticising others, I think - but history proves that whoever has the biggest stick wins, despite moral dubiousness.
UPDATE: Ok I'm hearing a lot of people hold up their hands and cry 'it's too complex' or 'too much history' and do nothing. Bollocks, tis a cop out - my ideas or politics might be naive, stupid, dumb or plain wrong but at least I HAVE an opinion and am brave enough to state it.
Until you engage in a discussion you can't learn; you might look like a prick doing so, that's the danger, which is why I boned up a bit on Hezbollah before I posted; but in no way are politicians any more skilled in it than you or I (just lie better).
Yes it's a complex region, yes there is history, yes I don't know it all, but yes I trust my instincts politically and what I DO KNOW and use that to make a judgement.
I wish others would do same, rather than sitting on the fence and bleating about it, or about others that are at least trying to understand, or state how they feel.
Otherwise we leave it to the 'experts' and politicians and we all know how they end up (either disgraced or dead in the woods).
