This is one of the blackhouses at Garennin. Blackhouses were how the islanders lived before the Clearances and depopulation of the area and shift to more modern housing. This is now a hostel where I stayed, and you can see the ruined rest of the village of Garennin, a sad and spooky reminder of the depopulation of the area and clearances that happened in the 19th and 20th centuries.

This was a Sunday, while the good burgers of Stornaway were locking up swings and going to church, I was walking to Acha Mor past the old Shielings with mostly just sheep for company.

On the walk to Dail Mor, there are loads of stone cairns like this, and I can witness that they are invaluable if the weather comes down, as it did when I first tried part of this walk the previous day. The paths were very slippy though.

St Clement's Church at Rodel on Harris - amazing 16th church with the tombs of the MacLeods of Dunvegan.
I remember getting attacked mercilessly by midges here, and sheltering inside from the rain.
Surprisingly good bus service here.

Wrecked boat at Leverburgh on Harris. Leverburgh was a failed attempt (by Lord Lever) at a model town in the 1930's, it's now where you catch the ferry to Berneray.

I wanted to buy this house and live here, next to the Callanish stones. Sadly crofters are being pushed out by the uneconomic hard life of farming on a small piece of land - youth depopulation is a real problem, they don't want to croft like their parents. Interestingly southerners are moving in to try crofting...and a lot of crofts are now protected from becoming tourist/weekend cottages.
The shape next to it is the ruins of a blackhouse...and there also was a previous circular hut ruin on the site also - several generations. Shame this was empty, all that history gone to waste.
